Welcome to our unique off-grid family retreat on Skuilkrans Private Nature Reserve, located in the higher foothills of the Rivier-Sonderend Mountains, outside McGregor. This rustic historic main cabin — once an old sheep herder's stone structure — has been lovingly renovated but remains a rustic space where a mouse can still sneak in. It's important to note that this is not a 5 star hotel: the views are magical and the night-time star gazing is extraordinary, but the cabin is basic yet comfortable. On one side, you'll find an enclosed patio with an 8-seater dining table and an indoor fireplace. On the other side, a bedroom with a king-size bed and a cozy living area offer stunning views of the Rivier-Sonderend Mountains. The middle of the historic structure features two rooms: one with a king-size bed, and another ideal for kids, with a triple-stacked bed, a sleeper couch and an additional single bed. A separate wooden cabin outside has a double bed for extra privacy. Enjoy the covered braai area, sheltered from strong winds, and unwind in the Kol-Kol wood-fired hot tub for a night of stargazing. The kitchen is equipped with a gas hob and gas fridge-freezer, while eco-friendly dry toilet facilities are housed in a small wooden hut outside the main cabin.
Access: A 4x4 high-ground-clearance vehicle is required. A transfer service is available at an additional cost if needed.
Water Supply: Rainwater is collected and stored in tanks for the hot tub and washing dishes — not suitable for drinking. 20L of fresh drinking water is supplied in a container in the kitchen, but guests are encouraged to bring additional bottled water.
Toilet Facilities: The cabin uses an eco-friendly dry-toilet system housed in a small wooden hut outside the main cabin.
The listed rate is for 2 people using one room — additional fees apply for more guests, or when booking for 2 people but planning to use more rooms (additional linen and cleaning fees). This is a rustic mountain cabin, not a city-slickers five-star resort — though the atmosphere, views and serenity of the nature reserve are 10-star equivalent. Solar power is used for lights, with a charging port available for cellphones and tablets. Solar shower bags provide a shower with a view outside. The family cabin is a 90-minute drive from McGregor, so all food supplies need to be brought up by guests. A gas fridge-freezer keeps perishables during your stay.
Guests have exclusive access to the entire family cabin and can explore the 1400ha farm at their leisure — hiking, trail running, or mountain biking on the numerous jeep track trails, or taking a scenic drive for nature and small-game viewing.
